Earlier today Pittsburgh Pirates reached an agreement with right-hander Charlie Morton on a three-year contract extension worth $21 million that could reach $30 million in total value according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports.
Now the news that the team has agreed to terms with right-hander Edinson Volquez on a one-year worth $5 million.
Morton would have been eligible for free agency following the 2014 season. He is coming off a strong 2012 in which he pitched to a 3.26 ERA and recorded in astounding 62.9 percent ground-ball rate.
Volquez was released by the Padres after pitching to a 6.01 ERA over 142 1/3 innings of work last season.
Volquez will join Francisco Liriano, Gerrit Cole, Wandy Rodriguez and Morton in the Pirates’ rotation. Volquez will look to return to form for the Pirates this spring.
