Figgins should draw interest from a number of major league teams
Chone Figgins was designated for assignment last week by the Seattle Mariners giving the team 10 days to trade or release him. According to Greg Johns from MLB.com the Mariners officially released Figgins today
Figgins signed a four-year, $36 million deal with the Mariners after the 2009 season but, hit .227/.302/.283 in three seasons with the team. He is still owed $8 million for 2013, a sum that the Mariners will be responsible for, meaning any major league team that signs Figgins would be responsible for the MLB minimum salary.
Figgins should draw interest from several teams. One team that may have significant interest is the Tampa Bay Rays. Figgins is from the Tampa Bay area, having played high school baseball at Brandon High and Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon is very familiar with him from his Los Angeles Angels days.
The Rays are always looking for versatile utility players, and Figgins fits the bill, having played multiple positions, including third base, second base, and in the outfield.
