Yankees solidify their rotation for 2013 with Pettitte signing

As we reported earlier this week the New York Yankees and Andy Pettitte were nearing a deal for 2013.

Today Yankees GM Brian Cashman confirmed that the team and Pettitte agreed to a one-year deal worth $12 million plus incentives.

After re-signing Hiroki Kuroda to a one-year, $15 million last week the Yankees rota ion now appears set for 2013 with CC Sabathia, Kuroda, Pettitte, Phil Hughes and Ivan Nova.

Nova may compete with David Phelps for the number five spot this spring, however, Phelps was excellent in the Yankees bullpen in 2012. Michael Pineda may be in that mix as well depending on when he is ready to return from injury.

Pettitte went 5-4 with a 2.87 ERA in 12 starts and made two starts in the post season including Game one of the ALCS. Mariano Rivera and Ichiro Suzuki are next up to make their deals official.

For those who like to keep track, the Yankees do seem to be building their team for 2013 with a measure of financial restraint and guarding multi-year deals very closely this offseason. The team as stated repeatedly its desire to lower payroll $189 million by 2014. So far mission accomplished.
