Former teammates with the Detroit Tigers Jack Morris and Alan Trammel were voted by the Modern Era Committee into Cooperstown on Sunday.
The Baseball Hall of Fame will also induct a minimum of two new members during the summer.
On Sunday night, the Hall announced that longtime teammates with the Tigers Jack Morris and Alan Trammel were voted into the Hall by its Modern Era Committee consisting of 16 members.
To be inducted in this manner, a candidate must receive a minimum of 12 votes. Appearing on the ballot of the Modern Era Committee with Morris and Trammell were former chief of the MLB Players Associations Marvin Miller and players Tommy John, Steve Garvey, Don Mattingly, Dave Parker, Dale Murphy, Luis Tiant and Ted Simmons.
Per the announcement made by the Hall of Fame the Modern Era Committee cast 14 votes for Morris, 13 for Trammell, 11 for Simmons, 7 for Miller, and less than 7 each for Garvey, Mattingly, Murphy, John, Tiant and Parker.
With 11, Simmons came up just one vote shy of induction.
Morris’ 15 years on the BBWAA ballot for Hall of Fame induction was exhausted in 2014 without being inducted. The right-hander pitched for 18 seasons with four different teams between 1977 and 1994. His record was 254-186, with an ERA of 3.90 across 3,824 innings pitched.
Morris was an All-Star team member five times and finished fifth or better in five Cy Young Award ballots, though he did not win the award during his career. The career ERA of 3.90 for Morris will be the highest of any full-time pitcher in baseball’s Hall of Fame.
Trammell played with Morris for the Tigers from 1977 to 1990, and spent his entire career of 20 years with the Tigers. He finished his career at .285/.352/.415 with 185 homers and 236 bases stolen.
Trammell was an All-Star six times and finished second in the American League MVP voting in 1987. His 15 years of eligibility ended in 2016 on the BBWAA ballot.
The Modern Era Committee is one of the Hall’s four era committees that replaced the Veterans Committee. These four meet every couple of years to vote on former players and other personnel in baseball from different eras.
The Modern Era Committee that consists of 16 members includes Hall of Famers Rod Carew, George Brett, Bobby Cox, John Schuerholz, Dennis Eckersley, Don Sutton, Robin Yount and Dave Winfield; executives Bill DeWitt, Sandy Alderson, Bob Catellini, Paul Beeston, and David Glass,; and historians Steve Hirdt, Jayson Stark and Bob Elliott.
Winners of the main voting process of the Hall by the Baseball Writers Association of America will be announced during January.
