The Texas Rangers are nearing a deal with free-agent catcher J.P. Arencibia according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports. Arencibia was non-tendered by the Toronto Blue Jays making him a free agent and it now seems like Texas may be where he lands.
The Rangers were interested in Arencibia prior to him being non-tendered, however were unable to come up with a deal with the Blue Jays.
Geovany Soto and Robinson Chirinos are the teams projected catchers at this time.
Arencibia would be a classic “buy low” free agent. In 1,392 major league plate appearances, Arencibia has compiled a .258 on-base-percentage, but his power would play well in Texas.
