The Tampa Bay Rays will re-sign righthander Juan Carlos Oviedo, the pitcher formerly known as Leo Nuñez, according to Mark Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. The Rays declined a $2 million club option at the end of the season.
Oviedo spent the entire 2013 season rehabbing from Tommy John surgery with Tampa Bay. Oviedo has thrown 357 innings to go along with a 4.34 ERA in his Major League career. The last pitched in the big leagues in 2011.
Oviedo saved 92 games with a 3.86 ERA during his three years with the Marlins. The Rays as is their custom each off-season are in the process of rebuilding the bullpen. Fernando Rodney Closed for Tampa Bay last two season and is now a free agent. Oviedo could be in the ninth inning mix along with Jake McGee and Joel Peralta.
