Eduardo Nunez is still battling discomfort in his rib cage and has not been in a game since May 5th against Oakland. New York has not placed him on the disabled list, implying there is some optimism he could return before May 20th and move back into his role as the starting shortstop.
The Yankees traded for Alberto Gonzalez on Thursday night, acquiring him from the Cubs for a player to be named later.
Fantasy Play: Nunez was a nice sentiment out of spring training in deeper leagues for a respectable bat and the ability to steal bases. However, despite reports Nunez is feeling better and likely to return over the next week or so, he is batting just .200/.290 this year, potentially due to concentrating extra hard on his much improved defense.
With the trade for Gonzalez, it’s no longer guaranteed Nunez will get the majority of playing time until the All-Star break, but he was starting to show signs of breaking out of a slump before his injury. He’s not worth a pick-up at this time, but is someone to watch loosely once he’s back on the field.
