The Boston Red Sox placed closer Joel Hanrahan on the disabled list with a strained right hamstring and called up right-handed pitcher Steven Wright from Triple-A Pawtucket to take his place on the roster. Hanrahan initially injured the hamstring in the second game of the season during a game against the New York Yankees. “It’s kind of been there every game,” said Hanrahan, who has appeared in six games. “It’s just progressively gotten a little worse.
Hanrahan, 31, has saved three of his four chances this season with an 11.57 ERA, 2.36 WHIP and five walks compared to four strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings. Andrew Bailey becomes the new closer for Boston. Bailey blew his first opportunity yesterday against the Tampa Bay Rays, but was bailed out in the bottom of the ninth by a Red Sox rally.
Wright , 28, is 1-0 this season with a 2.70 ERA. Wright was 10-7 with a 2.54 ERA and 1.26 WHIP in 25 starts last season across both Double-A and Triple-A. Wright and knuckleballer has been working with Tim Wakefield.
