Has Ortiz Played his Last Game With Boston
The Red Sox placed slugger David Ortiz on the 15 day disabled list and recalled Ryan Kalish from Triple-A Pawtucket in a corresponding move. Ortiz missed 35 games with a right Achilles strain after being placed on the DL July 17.
Ortiz returned to action Friday night, and went 2 for 4 with two RBI, but discomfort and soreness prevented him from playing Saturday and Sunday. The 36-year-old Ortiz was having one of the best seasons of his career, hitting .318 with 23 home runs, 60 RBIs and a 1.026 OPS.
It is unclear whether Ortiz will return this season, him and risk further injury. Ortiz will get an injection in his heel and see how he responds to the treatment before determining whether or not he will return this season.
Ortiz signed a one-year contract with the Sox and and the team had said they want Ortiz to return next season, however the injury could affect Ortiz’ ability to secure a multi-year deal.
However, the Red Sox are determined to compete in 2013, and keeping Ortiz would have to be a part of that discussion, although it is unlikely the team will do no more than offer him arbitration again.
