Carl Crawford – Visitng Dr. Andrews is Never a Good Thing

Carl Crawford has an appointment with Dr. James Andrews about soreness in his left elbow. By and large visiting Dr. Andrews is never a good thing. Following wrist surgery earlier this year Crawford had begun working out in an extended spring training games in Fort Myers.

At the start of spring training, before his sore elbow had become an issue, most people thought  Crawford would be playing for the Red Sox in early May.  At this point, early May is not going to happen

He began feeling soreness in his left elbow, and an MRI revealed that he had a strain. The visit to Dr. Andrews is to confirm that diagnosis and to make sure that the injury is not more serious. The Red Sox are not off to a good start, and this only compounds the problem.

Jacoby Ellsbury is on the disabled list with a bad shoulder and is expected to be out a minimum of 4 to 6 weeks. Combined with Crawford’s  loss and that’s two thirds of an outfield that isn’t playing for the Red Sox.

Crawford signed a seven-year, $142 million contract as a free agent before last year and had a very difficult year with the Red Sox. He batted .255 with a .289 on-base percentage and only hit 11 home runs and stole 18 bases. That’s not exactly what you expect when you pay $142 million.

Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine has been busy shuffling outfielders in and out of his lineup and has settled in on Cody Ross and Ryan Sweeney for the time being.  Hopefully, Crawford gets a positive report from Dr. Andrews and he makes it back to Boston.

Red Sox fans don’t have a lot of patience with players that don’t produce an Crawford is getting closer and closer to that status, if he hasn’t already. That’s a shame, Carl Crawford is a good guy and a good player. I hope that I am wrong about the Carl Crawford visit to Dr. Andrews.
