With the signing of A.J. Pierzynski by the Boston Red Sox expect the interest for free-agent catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia to rise significantly as the run on catchers this off-season continues.
The Miami Marlins reportedly made an offer to catcher Saltalamacchia and the Minnesota Twins who lost out on Pierzynski to Boston could be a perfect fit for Saltalamacchia.
The Red Sox reportedly offered Saltalamacchia a two-year deal. Saltalamacchia is said to be looking for a three-year deal at the minimum and the market for catchers could earn him a four-year deal worth $36 million according to Tim Dierkes of MLB Trade Rumors.
He hit .273 with 14 home runs and 65 RBIs in 2013.
Minnesota has a need at catcher after deciding that Joe Mauer will move to first base in 2014 and Saltalamacchia may opt for the twins over the Marlins who are in a constant state of rebuilding. The Twins recently signed Phil Hughes and Ricky Nolasco and Saltalamacchia would be the perfect complement to the newly formed Twins rotation.
