Matt Garza Activated From DL Will Start Against Pirates

matt garza cubsChicago Cubs starter Matt Garza missed most of spring training with a lat injury on the heels of missing most of the second half of last season with an elbow problem.

Garza last pitched in a major-league game in July 2012, but will return to make his season debut against the Pittsburgh Pirates after being activated from the disabled list.

In his latest rehab start, the right-hander pitched six shutout innings for Triple-A Iowa and struck out six.Garza, never one to shy away from the moment  appears to go.

“I’m excited and happy I don’t have to rehab again,” Garza said Saturday. “This actually means something, so I can’t wait. It’s been 10 months in the making, I’m excited to get back out there.”

the constant for assignment reliever  Michael Bowden to make room  on the roster for Garza.  Carlos Villanueva will be moved to the bullpen.
