After five scoreless innings of three-hit ball on Monday night, it appeared that San Francisco Giants starter Ryan Vogelsong was starting to right the ship in a season that has been marred by inconsistent play.
However, hope was short-lived for Vogelsong. In the the bottom of the fifth-inning with the Giants leading the Washington Nationals 6-0, Ryan Vogelsong was struck on his pitching hand while swinging on a pitch from Washington reliver Craig Stammen.
Vogelsong was immediately taken out of the game, as trainers covered his right hand with a towel as they exited the field (suggesting a more serious injury). Vogelsong was diagnosed with a broken right hand following X-rays on Monday night and was scheduled for surgery on Tuesday.
Although Vogelsong was credited with the victory, he still owns a 2-4 record and unimpressive 7.19 ERA in 46.1 innings of work this season. Vogelsong’s struggles come off of a successful past two seasons where he posted a 27-16 record with a 3.04 ERA in 59 starts for the Giants.
