Apparently New York Mets ace Matt Harvey has his own plans with how many innings he will pitch in 2015 and it includes pitching in the Playoffs. Harvey penned his response to the innings-limit debate via The Players Tribune with a short, to the point response.
“I understand the risks. I am also fully aware of the opportunity the Mets have this postseason,” Harvey wrote for the website, “Winning the division and getting to the playoffs is our goal. Once we are there, I will be there.”
Over the weekend “know it all super agent”, Scott Boras, told CBS Sports that Harvey should not exceed 180 innings this season, according to a recommendation from his surgeon, Dr. James Andrews.
The Mets and General Manager Sandy Alderson are said to be devising a plan that would have Harvey starting for the Mets in the playoffs. The Mets announced last week plans to possibly skip another one of Harvey’s starts this month.
“I can assure everyone that we’re all on the same page,” Harvey wrote. “It will be a compromise between the doctors and the Mets organization to get me, and the team, to where we need to be for our postseason run.”
“You’ve heard about the 180-185 innings cap. That seems to be the number that will allow me to pitch into the postseason.
Regardless of those numbers, I hope everyone knows: I have always wanted to play. I have always wanted to pitch every single chance I get,” Harvey wrote.
The Mets currently enjoy a four-game lead over the Washington Nationals in the National League East and begin a crucial three-game series beginning Monday in Washington. Harvey is scheduled to pitch Tuesday night game.
Washington has lost just one game so far in September, and is 13–6 since the team’s mid-August losing streak while the Mets went 12–6 during that same span and are 2–3 in September.
Mets manager Terry Collins said he wants Harvey to focus on his next start in Washington.
“I’m going to have a conversation with him,” Collins said. “I always feel that it’s not what you say, it’s what you do. Go pitch good and the rest of it will take care of itself.”
In Mondays opener, Max Scherzer will go head-to-head with Jonathon Niese. Tuesday will feature Jordan Zimmermann versus Harvey, and Wednesday could pit Stephen Strasburg against Jacob
