The Atlanta Braves have reached an agreement with right-hander Gavin Floyd on a one-year deal, with a base salary of $4.4 million and incentives that can earn the 30-year-old another $4.5 million. Floyd worked just 24 1/3 innings last season pitching to a 5.18 ERA before undergoing Tommy John surgery in May. He is not expected to be able to pitch until May 2014.
When healthy Floyd will join a rotation that consist of Mike Minor, Julio Teheran, Kris Medlen,Brandon Beachy and Alex Wood, with David Hale as an additional candidate.
Atlanta lost Tim Hudson to free agency and the San Francisco Giants in November and may not be finished looking for starting pitching.
The team is rumored to be interested in pursuing Tampa Bay’s David Price and the Chicago Cubs’ Jeff Samardzija. It’s hard to imagine that a team that won 96 games in 2013 is going to essentially stand pat going into 2014, especially with the moves that division rival the Washington Nationals have made.
