David Ortiz hit his 400th career home run today when he took a pitch from Oaklnd’s A.J. Griffin deep in the fourth inning today.
Ortiz became the 49th player in major league history to hit 400 home runs. It was Ortiz’s 22nd home run of the season to tie him for fifth place in the American League.
Earlier this week Ortiz earned the American League’s starting DH for next week’s All-Star game in Kansas City’s Kauffman Stadium.
The 36-year-old Ortiz is on pace to become the fifth player in major league history to hit .300 with 40 home runs and 100 RBI after the age of 36. Ortiz had gone 25 at-bats without a home run. Today’s home run tied the game 1-1, but the A’s hung on to defeat the Red Sox 3-2 and sweep the series.
Ortiz became the sixth player to hit 400 home runs in a Red Sox uniform. Babe Ruth did it twice, Hank Aaron once, Andres Galarraga twice and Barry Bonds three times.
