George Brett Named Interim Hitting Coach For Kansas City Royals

Hall of Famer George Brett was named the interim hitting coach for the Kansas City Royals and will take over the job immediately. Brett will replace Jack Maloof and Andre David, who have been reassigned within the organization.

Brett  has worked numerous times as a volunteer coach at spring training but this is his first in season coaching job.

“I’m thankful that this organization has one of the greatest hitters and more importantly one of the greatest competitors our game has ever seen in George Brett, and he has accepted our offer to join the coaching staff on an interim basis,” Royals general manager Dayton Moore said.

Moore traded prospect Wil Myers last winter in an effort to shore up the pitching staff, along with re-signing free-agent  Jeremy Guthrie and trading for Ervin Santana.  Those move has helped the team improve its run prevention about half a run per game over last year, but  the team has struggled offensively.

The Royals are mired in a deep offensive slump having won just four of their last 23 games. The team hasn’t scored more than three runs in their last six games and rank near the bottom of the pack in the American League in runs, walks, homers,  and RBI, and find themselves at the bottom of the American League Central.

Royals manager Ned Yost has stated that he wants an offense with more power.  Kevin Seitzer  was let go following last season. Brett had  3,154 hits with a career .305/.369/.487 line. Now if he can get his vast knowledge across to the Royals.
