As the old adage goes, age is only a number. Such can be said of Oakland Athletics starter Bartolo Colon‘s pitching performance on Sunday in a 6-2 victory over the Houston Astros.
After celebrating his 40th birthday on Friday, Colon turned in his best outing of the season and displayed flashes of previous seasons when he was considered one of the top pitchers in the big leagues.
Colon worked seven scoreless innings, surrendering nine hits and striking out a season-high nine strikeouts with no walks.
Colon was the 2005 AL Cy Young Award recipient after posting a 21-8 record for the Los Angeles Angels. Between 2002 and 2005, Colon registered 74 victories with four different teams across both leagues, which included 20-win seasons in 2002 and 2005.
Oakland first baseman Nate Freiman led the charge for the Athletics with a two-run double in the fourth inning and a solo home run in the sixth.
The Athletics extended their win streak to three games, having won eight of their last ten games. Oakland improved to a 28-23 record, 4.5 games behind the AL West division leading Texas Rangers.
