Cleveland Indians closer Chris Perez was placed on the 15 day disabled list after leaving the game yesterday in the ninth-inning feeling shoulder pain. Perez will undergo an MRI today and Nick Hagadone was called up from Columbus to take his spot on the roster.
Perez is 2-1 with a 4.32 ERA in 17 relief appearances spanning 16.2 inning and has recorded more than 30 saves in each of the past two seasons for the Indians. It will be the first time Perez has been on the DL in his career.
Apparently Perez has been dealing with the issue for the past couple of weeks.
“I don’t want to leave that mound at all, especially with the game on the line like that and the team trying to cling to a win,” Perez said Sunday. “But you can’t pick when you’re going to get hurt and unfortunately right now it’s a little sore.”
With Perez out Joe Smith would be in line for save opportunities as would Vinnie Pestano.
