Minnesota Twins third baseman Trevor Plouffe was placed on the seven-day DL on Wednesday after being diagnosed with a concussion. After being hit by a Craig Kimbrel fastball in the tenth-inning, Plouffe would attempt to brake up a double play, but in the process would be struck in the head by Atlanta second baseman Dan Uggla‘s shin.
Plouffe writhed on the ground for a few minutes before exiting the field under his own power, covering his eyes due to light sensitivity. Minnesota will wait a few days before scheduling Plouffe for a concussion impact test.
In 37 games this season, Plouffe is hitting .254 with four home runs and 17 RBI. Over the past seven games, Plouffe has gone 6-for-18, hitting .333.
Despite an RBI single in the eighth-inning that would serve as the go-ahead for a 4-3 Minnesota lead, Minnesota relievers Glen Perkins and Brian Duensing would allow for an extra-innings 5-4 loss to Atlanta, capped by a Freddie Freeman RBI single in the bottom of the tenth-inning.
