Hector Santiago made a start for the White Sox on Tuesday in place of the injured Jake Peavy and delivered with seven shutout innings against the Mets. Peavy, off to a nice start to the year himself, missed his start with a back injury paving the way for the 25 year-old Santiago to perform. The Mets beat the White Sox in 10 innings despite Santiago’s efforts.
Fantasy Play: It didn’t help Santiago’s pride he faced off against Mets’ phenom, Matt Harvey, who pitched his own shutout, also received a no-decision and struck out 10 in the process. Still, this was encouraging for Santiago who had yet to give up a run in AAA through 14.2 innings and has posted a solid few appearances at the major league level in 2013.
The White Sox currently have John Danks, Gavin Floyd and Peavy out of the rotation so it’s worth monitoring Santiago, who will likely get another start to prove himself the next time through the rotation when all is said and done. Manager Robin Ventura has already implied the final spot in the rotation is Santiago’s to lose when Peavy and Danks return from short-term injuries.
