Felix Doubront has been battling a diminished fastball and control problems, and now it will cost him a turn in the rotation. Highly rated prospect, Allen Webster, has been recalled from AAA to take injured closer, Joel Hanrahan‘s spot on the roster.
Webster is expected to make a start against the Twins while Doubront attempts to rediscover his fastball and location in the bullpen.
Fantasy Play: It truly is a puzzling situation. Doubront was supposed to be a potential sleeper and is now struggling to keep his spot in the rotation. Webster has done his part so far, throwing six innings of two run ball in his debut on April 21st, so this is a situation to monitor closely if Webster continues to throw well.
If Doubront continues to struggle and Webster demonstrates he belongs, it’s not unrealistic to think Webster could stick in the rotation in some capacity. The Red Sox would be foolish to give up on Doubront long-term as a starter, but right now Webster should be acquired if there is a roster spot available and Doubront should be benched until he proves he can perform.
