It wasn’t really a divorce after all. After a disastrous postseason the Detroit Tigers decided that Jose Valverde wasn’t a part of the plans going forward for 2013. At that time the decision seemed like a final decree.
Yesterday he Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski met with the media to announce that the Tigers will purchase the contract of Jose Valverde from Class A Lakeland, where he pitched three scoreless innings after signing a minor-league deal earlier this month.
“His stuff is back throwing like he did a couple years ago,” Dombrowski said Tuesday night of Valverde. “We’ve had a lot of people see him. He feels good about himself. He feels he’s ready to do it. I would not have anticipated him throwing with this velocity when we originally brought him on board. But he’s done it and he’s done it consistently.”
So call it a separation, the final divorce papers were never really signed, and Valverde is the Detroit Tigers closer again.
