The Atlanta Braves, which have the best record in the majors at 15-5, regained first baseman Freddie Freeman from the disabled list but will now be without outfielder Jason Heyward, who underwent an emergency appendectomy in Denver on Monday.
Heyward has struggled at the plate in April, hitting .121 with two home runs and five RBI in 58 at-bats. The Braves lineup has been fueled by Justin Upton, who leads the majors with 11 home runs. B.J. Upton is batting .160 with three home runs and five RBI.
Heyward and the Upton brothers were projected to give Atlanta one of the most formidable outfield trios in baseball. Infielder and fan favorite Tyler Pastornicky was called up to replace Heyward on the active roster.
According to Heyward all is well
“Good morning, I wish everyone well. Thankful for everyone that’s taken time out of their day to send me well wishes, prayers and comfort. I’m fortunate enough that the surgery I needed was nothing more serious than removing something that we as ppl don’t need to live anyway. Although there’s a little discomfort it won’t last. And there are ppl that have surgery to remove things that are far more life threatening than an appendix. For those concerned, I’m as comfortable as I can be recovering. Resting up and I’ll be back to work as soon as it’s smart to do so. Looking forward to watching my teammates strive towards a common goal while I’m out, and looking forward to joining them again on the field asap. Thank y’all again for your time and thoughts.
Take care
