The Baltimore Orioles won their 17th straight extra innings game, including 16 last season when Matt Wieters hit a grand slam in the bottom of the 10th inning to beat the Tampa Bay Rays 10-6. Reigning AL Cy Young winner David Price was handed the lead by the Rays offense three times, only to give it right back to Baltimore.
Nolan Reimold and Steve Pearce also homered for the Orioles, who took two of three from their AL East rivals. Desmond Jennings opened the game with his second leadoff homer of the series – he also led of Tuesday’s game with a homer. Three batters later Rays third baseman Evan Longoria also homered.
Orioles designated hitter Steve Pearce, who entered Thursday’s game against the Rays hitless in his first 13 at-bats of the season, ended his slump in a big way, hitting a two-run homer off Rays reliever Jake McGee to give the Orioles a 6-5 lead in the seventh inning. Rays first baseman James Loney’s eighth-inning homer off reliever Darren O’Day tied the game at 6. It was the first run scored off O’Day in eight outings this season
Nick Markakis led off the 10th with a single against Jamey Wright, Brandon Gomes came in to face Manny Machado, who reached on a bunt single .Adam Jones followed with a long single to the warning track that got away from right fielder Ben Zobrist, but Markakis held up at second and could only make it to third, setting up the dramatic blast by Wieters.
