AL Scores: Red Sox Rally For Win, Angels Pound Tigers, Rays Blank A’s

Red Soc NewsDaniel Nava  in a three run homer  in the eighth inning and the Boston Red Sox rallied for their seventh win in a row over the Kansas City Royals 4-3. The game was the first for the Red Sox in Fenway since the Boston marathon bombings.

Kansas City players and staff wore a “B Strong” patch on the front of their jerseys. Neil Diamond sang Red Sox favorite “Sweet Caroline” before the bottom of the eighth.

“Knowing everything that went into the day for the city, for us to get the win, it came in a special way, special fashion,” Nava said. “It made it all that more important.”

Clay Buchholz  pitched eight innings of two-run baseball striking out six to improve his record to 4-0.  James Shields tossed six innings for Kansas City striking out eight and giving up one run.

Los Angeles 10  Detroit 0   Mike Trout  hit his first career grand slam and Garrett Richards  threw  seven innings of shutout ball while striking out eight to lead the Los Angeles Angels over the Detroit Tigers 10-0.  Rick Porcello  gave up nine earned runs and two thirds of an inning to take the loss for Detroit. Albert Pujols  and Mark Trumbo had two hits for the Angels.

Tampa Bay 1 Oakland 0 Jeremy Hellickson  turned in his best performance of the season pitching seven shutout innings and Matt Joyce provided all the runs Tampa Bay would need to beat the Oakland Athletics with a home run in the second inning. Fernando Rodney worked the ninth, finishing the three-hit shutout and earning his second save in three opportunities.

New York 5 Toronto 3  Toronto Blue Jays reliever Aaron Loup made a two-run throwing error in the 11th inning and the Yankees beat Toronto 5-3 on Saturday for their ninth win in 11 games.  Vernon Wells hit his fifth home run for the Yankees.  Hiroki Kuroda  pitched into the eighth floor New York allowing one earned run and striking out seven. Mariano Rivera recorded his fifth save of the season.

Minnesota 2 Chicago 1  Ryan Doumit doubled and scored the go-ahead run in the 10th inning on Alexei Ramirez‘s throwing error.  and the Minnesota Twins beat the Chicago White Sox 2-1. Jake Peavy allowed one run and six hits, struck out nine and walked four in seven innings.

 Cleveland 19 Houston 6   Cleveland Indians scored eight runs in the first inning, six runs in the second inning and added five more runs over the next three innings to beat the Houston Astros 19-6.  Scott Kazmir making his first start for Cleveland allowed six earned runs in 3 1/3 innings before being lifted.  Mark Reynolds, Jason Giambi, Lonnie Chisenhall and Carlos Santana all hit home runs for Cleveland.

Texas 5 Seattle 0 Derek Lowe pitched four hitless innings in relief of injured starter Nick TepeschA.J. Pierzynski and David Murphy each hit solo homers and the Texas Rangers beat the Seattle Mariners 5-0

Baltimore 7 Los Angeles 5  Nolan Reimold homered and hit a tiebreaking two-run double in the eighth inning as the Orioles rallied to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-5. Andre Ethier hit a three-run homer for the Dodgers, whose five-game skid is their longest since a seven-game run last June.  Hyun-Jin Ryu couldn’t hold the lead  gave up five runs and eight hits in six innings of work.
