Initially reported as a jammed heel Boston Red Sox center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury rolled his ankle while getting back to first base on a pickoff attempt in the first inning of the game against the Philadelphia Phillies in Clearwater. “I was trying to get in and beat the tag and I kind of rolled (the ankle),” Ellsbury said. “I just stepped on the base and rolled it.”
“It’s going to be good,” Ellsbury said. “It just got a little tight, but it’s nothing of a concern.
Ellsbury will likely be out of action tomorrow and will have the ankle reevaluated. The Red Sox are off on Tuesday, and the team is hopeful that he can return on Wednesday and that the injury is nothing more than a slight sprain.
Ellburry is expected to become a free agent after the season, and has missed 236 games over the past three seasons and appeared in just 74 games in 2012. Jackie Bradley Jr. Is the heir apparent and forcing the Red Sox to a tough decision with his play this spring.
