The Tampa Bay Rays have reached an agreement on minor league deal with free agent left-handed starting pitcher Erik Bedard. The deal will include a spring training invite. He was 4-12 with a 4.59 ERA, 1.48 WHIP an 138 strikeouts in 151 innings last season for the Astros.
Bedard will join David Price, Matt Moore, Alex Cobb, Chris Archer, and Jake Odorizzi in the discussion for the Rays rotation or could be used out of the bullpen. The 34 year old Bedard has evolved into a bit of a soft tosser in recent years with a fastball that tops out at 89 MPH.
With Jeremy Hellickson out until at least late May, adding Bedard may just be adding some depth for the Rays.
