The Philadelphia Phillies have designated Delmon Young for assignment to clear room for Casper Wells who was claimed from the Chicago White Sox on waivers earlier this week.
They will have 10 days to trade or release the 27-year-old.
The Phillies will pay Wells a sum less than what they would have paid Young.
The No. 1 overall pick by Tampa Bay in 2003, Young has a career slash line of .283/.316/.423.
He spent four seasons with the Minnesota Twins and two with the Detroit Tigers. Young batted just .261/.302/.397 for the Phillies.
