The eight players who will participate in this year’s Home Run Derby were announced Monday afternoon on Baseball Tonight’s Twitter feed and much buzz is already surrounding this year’s field of participants.
This year’s Home Run Derby will take place on Tuesday, July 16, the night before the 84th All-Star Game takes place at Citi Field in New York, the second time the Mets will host the midsummer classic and the first since 1964.
As for the National League, captain David Wright selected two Colorado Rockies by giving the nod to both Michael Cuddyer and Carlos Gonzalez, as well as the Washington Nationals’ Bryce Harper.
Participants from the American League have won 17 of the 29 derbies that have taken place since the event’s inception in 1985. The American League has taken home three straight derby wins and five of the last six, as Fielder registered his second career derby win last year at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City.
With that being said, we will now take a look at each of the participants that will represent both leagues in this year’s Home Run Derby.
