Yadier Molina, the St. Louis Cardinals’ all-star catcher, led the charge on Monday in the Cardinals’ 6-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals.
Molina went 2-for-2 with a home run and four RBI while drawing two walks. Molina started off the game with a two-run bomb to left centerfield in the first inning, followed by an RBI double in the third and a sacrifice fly in the fourth.
Molina has had a phenomenal month of May, racking up 31 hits and batting .386. On the season, he is batting an NL second-best .346 and has hit three home runs along with 27 RBI.
Although surrendering 12 hits, Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright pitched eight strong innings, allowing three runs and striking out five batters. Wainwright improved to a 7-3 record and now boasts a solid 2.48 ERA on the season.
With the victory over the slumping Royals (who have now lost six straight games and nine of their last ten), the Cardinals improved to an NL-best 33-17 record and remain 1.5 games ahead of the Cincinnati Reds in the NL Central standings.
