The Toronto Blue Jays recalled Anthony Gose from Triple-A Buffalo on Monday, optioning relief pitcher Mickey Storey to Buffalo to make room for Gose on the 40-man roster.
A second-round draft pick in the 2008 MLB Amateur Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies, Gose has been less than impressive in four seasons with Philadelphia and Toronto’s farm systems.
Following a 56-game stint with Toronto last season in which he batted .223 with 59 strikeouts in 189 plate appearances, Gose has struggled this season with Triple-A Buffalo.
While the call-up is questionable, it appears that Gose will serve as a defensive replacement for starting center fielder Melky Cabrera late in games, giving Cabrera the chance to rest an ailing hamstring and Gose some big league experience.
The Toronto Blue Jays are currently in the AL East basement, trailing the division leading New York Yankees by 10 games with a 17-26 record.
