The Cincinnati Reds announced that they have reached an agreement on a two-year contract with starting pitcher Mat Latos and avoided arbitration with the young right-hander. Pitcher Homer Bailey remains is the only player on the roster still arbitration eligible. The deal essentially buys out the first two seasons of arbitration eligibility. Latos will be a free agent after the 2015 season. Latos filed for $4.7 million during the arbitration process and the Reds countered with $4.15 million.
After joining the Reds last off-season in a trade with the San Diego Padres, Latos pitched to a 3.48 ERA over 209 1/3 innings of work. Pitchers and catchers reported for spring training today in Goodyear, Arizona. Cincinnati boasts a solid 1-2 punch atop the rotation with Johnny Cueto and Latos. Bronson Arroyo and Homer Bailey make up the number three and four starters in the Reds rotation, with power closer Aroldis Chapman likely holding down the number five spot after moving from the bullpen. Mike Leake could also figure in the mix. Position players are scheduled to report on February 15.
