Royals add outfield depth with Chavez signing

The Kansas City Royals have reached agreement with free-agent outfielder Endy Chavez. Terms of the deal were not immediately announced. Chavez would likely serve as a fourth outfielder behind Alex Gordon, Lorenzo Cain, and Jeff Francoeur. Chavez hit .203/.236/.278 with two homers, 12 RBI, six doubles and three steals in 2012 with the Baltimore Orioles. In 2011 with the Texas Rangers Chavez hit .301 with 11 steals. The Royals were 72-90 in 2012 finishing third in the American League Central behind the Detroit Tigers. The Royals have been aggressive throughout the off-season having traded for Rays pitchers James Shields and Wade Davis, making a trade with the Los Angeles Angels to acquire Ervin Santana, and re-signing starter Jeremy Guthrie. GM Dayton Moore is on record as saying the moves are about winning more games in 2013,  although some fans were upset the Royals gave up top prospects such as Wil Myers and Jake Odorizzi
