Angels Dan Haren Traded to Cubs for Carlos Marmol – Then Called Off

Update: Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reported that the Cubs pulled the trade off the table, even though Marmol, who has a limited no-trade clause, approved of going to Southern California. The Angels then declined Haren’s $15.5 million option for 2013, making him a free agent 

Dan Haren has said that he would love to return to the Los Angeles Angels next season, but admitted that was not likely going to happen. Today the Angels traded Haren and his $15.5 million contract to the Chicago Cubs for closer Carlos Marmol. Haren finished 12-13 in 30 starts with a 4.33 ERA last season for the Angels.

Marmol, would have to waive  his no-trade clause to accept the deal, was due to make $9.1 million in 2013 in the last year of his three-year, $21 million contract. Marmol appeared in 61 games for the Cubs in 2012, earning 20 saves and going 3-3 with a 3.42 ERA.

Haren had drawn the interest of the Boston Red Sox as well as the Cubs. The Angels have now traded Ervin Santana and Haren and are expected to make a big push to re-sign Zack Greinke. Greinke was acquired in a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers in late July.
