Carlos Ruiz Returns to Action for Phillies
The Philadelphia Phillies have activated catcher Carlos Ruiz from the disabled list and placed third baseman Placido Polanco on the DL with lower back inflammation. Ruiz last played on August 2.
Ruiz had plantar fasciitis in his left foot. The 33-year-old Ruiz, who has a $5 million team option for 2013 that will likely be picked up, was hitting a career-high .335 with 14 home runs, 58 RBI and a .959 OPS.
Ruiz had commented that it was important for him to return before the season ended, however how much playing time he will get has yet to be determined.
Rookie Erik Kratz has been getting the lion’s share of playing time for Philadelphia and has played well. Kratz is batting .287/.333/.611 with nine home runs in 108 at-bats.
