Mike Trout became the first American League player to win the American League player of the month and rookie of the month in the same month.
Ryan Braun of the Brewers and Buster Posey of the Giants are the only other players in major league baseball to win both awards in the same month.
Tampa Bay’s Jeremy Hellickson and the Marlins DontrelleWillis both want pitchers of the month and rookie of the month awards in the same month.
For the season Trout is hitting .353, with 18 home runs, 55 RBI, and scored 80 runs in his first 81 games.
The last player to drive in 55 runs and score at least 80 runs was Joe DiMaggio.
This was Trout’s third consecutive rookie of the month award. Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder,Minnesota’s Josh Willingham and Kansas City’s Alex Gordon all received votes for player of the month in July.
Yoenis Cespedes of the Oakland A’s also received votes for AL Rookie of the Month.
While winning American League rookie of the year for 2012 seems to be a foregone conclusion, Trout is a MVP candidate as well. Trout is not yet 21 years old, and has led the Angels in most offensive categories since his call up to the big leagues in May.
