NL Recaps – Pirates Offense Overcomes Shaky Start by McDonald

James McDnald NewsPittsburgh starter James McDonald gave up six earned runs in five innings of work, while walking four and striking out two, and still got a victory against the Colorado Rockies 9 – 6.

“James was able to find his way and navigate through five and just efficient work out of the bullpen,” Hurdle said. “He’s still growing up. The league fires back and when you’re not sharp you pay.”

Jones led the Pirates offense with three hits including a home run.

Pedro Alvarez, Rod Barajas and Casey McGehee also homered for the Pirates.

Dexter Fowler and Carlos Gonzalez homered for the Rockies.

Los Angeles 5 – Philadelphia 3 –  The Dodgers beat the Phillies today 5-3 in walkoff style.  Matt Kemp hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the 12th inning to break the tie and win the game. Cliff Lee was strong for the Phillies pitching eight innings and giving up one earned run, and Clayton Kershaw for the Dodgers matched him with eight innings and seven strikeouts, giving up just one run.

Milwaukee 4 – St. Louis 3 –  The Milwaukee Brewers held on to nip the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 and survive another shaky ninth-inning from Francisco Rodriguez.  David Freese and Alan Craig homered for the Cardinals. Adam Wainwright turn in a so-so effort, giving up four earned runs, in seven innings while striking out nine.

San Diego 8 – Houston 4 –  Yonder Alonso had two doubles and three RBI to help the San Diego Padres beat the Houston Astros 8-4. Closer Houston Street earned his 15th save of the season.

Arizona 7 – Cincinnati 1 –  Jason Kubel hit two home runs and led the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 71 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Ian Kennedy was outstanding for the D backs pitching eight innings striking out seven, and giving up just one earned run.
