Baltimore Orioles Wont Stand Pat With Roster

jason hammel oriolesThe Baltimore Orioles have not competed in the American League East since the late 90s. Manager Buck Showalter has them competing in 2012.

In what many consider to be the toughest division in baseball, the Orioles are not going to let this opportunity pass by. Offensively, the Orioles are very competitive with teams in the American League.

Off-season acquisition Jason Hammel has anchored the pitching staff, but he needs help. 3/5 of the Orioles pitching staff you has been demoted to AAA.

Orioles executive vice president Dan Duquette has said the team will do whatever is necessary to remain in contention for 2012 and has the financial support of ownership to take on more salary.

Zack Greinke is the latest starter the Orioles are reportedly interested in acquiring. The 2009 American League Cy Young Award winner who is a free-agent at the end of the season.

Greinke won’t come cheap in terms of what players would have to go back to the Brewers in a trade.

Greinke is making 13.5 million in the last year of his deal. He is pitching to a 3.08 ERA and is 9-2 in 17 starts with the Brewers.

Today it was reported that Duquette contacted the Houston Astros about Wandy Rodriguez. And there will be more players to discuss.

 

Opportunities to compete in the American League East have not come easy for the Orioles, Duquette is determined not to let this one pass.

Outfielder Nick Markakis (hamate bone surgery) will begin his minor league rehab assignment Saturday with Double-A Bowie. he is expected back soon after the all star break
