NEW YORK – Earlier today we reported that the Yankees placed starter CC Sabathia on the disabled list.
The Yankees starting rotation was dealt another blow in today’s game against the Cleveland Indians when Andy Pettitte was lost for a minimum of six weeks after having his left ankle fractured by Casey Kotchman‘s one-hop smash in the fifth inning. The Yankees won the game 5-4 and swept the Indians in their three-game series.
Pettitte is expected to miss at least six weeks. Pettitte’s ankle was placed in a boot and doctors determined that there was no surgery required. The 40-year-old left-hander was in the middle of a remarkable comeback after retiring.
Losing starting pitching like Pettitte and Sabathia will surely prompt the Yankees to make some calls to various teams on the availability of starting pitching through a trade. The Chicago Cubs are said to be shopping starters Ryan Dempster and Matt Garza, and either of those pitchers would fit well into the Yankees rotation.
Zack Greinke may also spark some interest from the Bronx bombers. The Yankees have been playing their best baseball of the season during the month of June with a record of 19-5, due in large part to very good starting pitching. Francisco Liriano from the Minnesota Twins may be available as well
