PHILADELPHIA – Jonathan Papelbon signed a $50 million dollar deal in the off-season with the Philadelphia Phillies. After blowing his first save of the season in 18 attempts against the Tampa Bay Rays, Papelbon decided to re-invest some of that money in the team, specifically in veteran slugger Jim Thome. Papelbon offered to pay teammate Jim Thome $5,000 if he would hit a pinch hit home run in the bottom of the ninth. Thome connected off Jake McGee (2-2) for home run No. 609. Papelbon said he told Thome in the on-deck circle that he would give him $5,000 if he hit a homer. Papelbon said he wrote the check in the clubhouse.
