Interleague Recaps – Santana Roughed Up By Yankees

NEW YORK –  In his first start since his no-hitter Johan Santana was roughed up by the New York Yankees 9-1. Santana gave up six runs in five innings of work, on seven hits he struck out five.  Robinson Cano homered twice. his second home run of the evening was followed by home runs by Nick Swisher and Andruw Jones. Yankees starter Hiroki Kuroda pitched seven shutout innings, striking out seven.

BOSTON – The Washington Nationals  Stephen Strasburg struck out 13 in six innings and Bryce Harper homered and the  Nationals beat the Boston Red Sox 7-4. Strasburg struck out five straight and seven of eight during a stretch from the third inning to the fifth.  Harper hit a two-run shot in the fourth and an RBI single in the sixth.

ST. LOUIS –  Johnny Damon hit a two-run homer and the Cleveland Indians beat St. Louis Cardinals 6-2. Indians starter Josh Tomlin scattered eight hits over seven innings, giving up just two earned runs to earn the victory. as Asdrubal Cabrera and Michael Brantley had two hits apiece for the Indians.

CINCINNATI – Joey Votto had three hits for Cincinnati, including a three-run homer off Rick Porcello and the Reds week the Detroit Tigers 6-5 .  Wilson Valdez‘s squeeze bunt with one out in the 10th inning scored Miguel Cairo . the Reds pounded 15 hits off five Tigers pitchers.

PITTSBURGH – Pittsburgh Pirates fans could get used to this. The Pirates move three games over .500 for first time this season with 4-2 win over Royals. Erik Bedard pitched seven solid innings, Neil Walker had three hits. Bedard (4-6) allowed two runs and five hits.

CHICAGO – Highlights for the Houston Astros have been few and far between this season. However,  Jed Lowrie, Brett Wallace and Brian Bogusevic homered and the Houston Astros got a strong effort from their bullpen to beat the Chicago White Sox 8-3. Wandy Rodriguez (5-4) gave up nine hits and three runs in 5 1/3 innings. Four relievers pitched shutout ball over the final 3 2/3 innings.

BALTIMORE – The Philadelphia Phillies ended a season-long six-game losing streak, beating the Baltimore Orioles 9-6. Jonathan Papelbon pitched the ninth and remained perfect in 16 save chances. Orioles starter Jake Arrieta was tagged for nine runs on 11 hits in four innings of work. He struck out five. Shane Victorino hit his eighth home run in the fourth inning. Phillies starter Joe Blanton didn’t have his best game, giving up five earned runs in 6 2/3 innings while striking out seven. The win improved his record to 5-6

MIAMI – So far the hot made that the Miami Marlins had has turned into a June swoon. Matt Joyce hit his 10th home run of the season, doubled and had three runs scored and the Rays beat the Miami Marlins 5-1, Rays starter Jeremy Hellickson walked a career-high seven batters and threw hundred and eight pitches in 4 1/3 innings. The Marlins have now lost four in a row and are 2-5 in June.

ATLANTA – The Atlanta Braves used their running game to steal a victory over the Toronto Blue Jays Friday night. JasonHeyward stole third base and scored on catcher J.P. Arencibia‘s throwing error in the 10th inning as the Atlanta Braves beat Toronto 4-3. Heyward had two hits on the night and scored two runs. José Bautista hit his 16th home run off of Brandon Beachy in a losing effort.

DENVER – Torii Hunter hit two home runs and drove in six to lead the Los Angeles Angels over the Colorado Rockies 7-2 . Hunter hit two-run homers in the third and fifth innings, raising his season total to eight with three in two games. Rookie of the year candidate Mike Trout had three hits and scored three times to back the pitching effort of Angel starter C.J. Wilson struck out nine in eight innings of work.

SEATTLE – Mariners use six pitchers to no-hit Dodgers

MINNEAPOLIS – Josh Willingham‘s RBI single in the 10th inning scored Darin Mastroianni and lead the Minnesota Twins over the Chicago Cubs 8-7. Ryan Doumit and Trevor Plouffe homered for the Twins. the Twins have now won eight of their last 10 games. For the Cubs, Alfonso Soriano homered twice and Starlin Castro added a homer and a triple.

SAN FRANCISCO – Josh Hamilton and Ian Kinsler homered for the Texas Rangers to back up the five hit shutout by Ranger starter Matt Harrison, and the Rangers beat the San Francisco Giants 5-0. the Giants never really threatened as Harrison was dominant throughout the night striking out four and walking none. Reserve outfielder Craig Gentry went five for five for the Rangers

NATIONAL LEAGUE RECAP – Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Corey Hart hit two solo home runs to lead the Brewers to a 9-5 victory over the San Diego Padres. Shaun Marcum earned his fifth victory of the season pitching into the sixth inning and surrendering three or runs while striking out six. Edinson Volquez took the loss for the Padres and is now 2-6 on the season.
