MLB Scores: Royals Sweep Doubleheader, Angels Sweep Tigers

Royals newsAfter an emotional win on Saturday the Boston Red Sox looked to extend their seven-game winning streak in a doubleheader on Sunday against the Kansas City Royals.  Ervin Santana had a different idea and allowed two runs on six hits with no walks and seven strikeouts to beat the Red Sox in the opener of a day-night doubleheader 4-2.

“I was leaving a couple of pitches up in the first inning,” Santana said. “I feel comfortable every time I take the mound and I have confidence.”

Ryan Dempster  gave the Red Sox seven innings but allowed four earned runs on six hits, with three walks. He struck out eight.  The Royals scored three runs in the fourth with Salvador Perez‘s two-run single breaking a 2-2 tie against Dempster

In the second game Allen Webster made his debut for Boston  and pitched well allowing two earned runs in six innings of work,  both the Royals chipped away at the Boston bullpen and the Royals swept the Red Sox.  Kelvin Herrera got the win  four Kansas City and Lorenzo Cain drew a bases-loaded walk in the 10th inning to help the Royals beat the Red Sox 5-4.

American League Scores

Tampa Bay  8 Oakland 1  Roberto Hernandez got his first win in the major leagues since 2011 and Yunel Escobar  busted out of a season-long slump with three hits including his first homerun of the season and the Rays beat Oakland 8-1, to sweep the weekend series.

Toronto 8 New York 4  Melky Cabrera had three hits, and J.P. Arencibia  hit his seventh home run of the season to rally Toronto past the New York Yankees 8-4

Los Angeles 7 Baltimore 4  Los Angeles Dodgers rallied to score 5 unanswered runs to beat the Baltimore Orioles 7-4 and end a six-game losing streak. Adam Jones homered and Chris Davis had three hits for the Orioles.  Mark Ellis drove in three runs and Matt Kemp singled in the go-ahead run during the four-run fifth inning.

Minnesota 5 Chicago 3  Josh Willingham had a three-run double to atone for a misplayed ball in the fourth inning and the Minnesota Twins beat the slumping Chicago White Sox 5-3.  Scott Diamond pitched six innings  allowing just one run to earn the win for Minnesota.  Adam Dunn hit his third home run  of the season for the White Sox.

Cleveland 5 Houston 4  Mark Reynolds hit his seventh home run of the season to help the Cleveland Indians to a 5-4 win over the Astros.  Drew Stubbs, Carlos Santana, and Yan Gomes  also homered for Cleveland.

Texas 11 Seattle 3  Nelson Cruz hit his fifth career grand slam to lead the Texas Rangers past the Seattle Mariners 11-3.

 Los Angeles 4 Detroit 3  The Los Angeles Angels beat the Detroit Tigers  on Mark Trumbo‘s walkoff home run in the 13th inning to sweep the weekend series from the Detroit Tigers.

National League Scores

Cincinnati 10 Miami 6 Todd Frazier hit a three-run double in an eight-run seventh inning to help the Reds overpower the Marlins.  Joey Votto  had three hits and a home run for the second straight day.

New York 2  Washington 0 John Buck hit his seventh home run, and five Mets pitchers combined to shut out the Nationals in a 2-0 win.

Pittsburgh 4 Atlanta 2 Clint Barmes had a pair of run-scoring singles for his first two RBIs of the season, including a tiebreaking hit in the sixth inning that led the Pirates over Atlanta 4-2 for their third straight win over the Braves.

Milwaukee 4 Chicago 2 Ryan Braun  in a three run home run and then was later ejected  and the Milwaukee Brewers held on to beat the Chicago Cubs 4-2

 San Francisco 5 San Diego 0  Barry Zito bounced back in the worst outing of his major league career to toss seven shutout innings to lead the Giants to a 5-0 win over the Padres. Zito’s outing followed gems by San Francisco starters Madison Bumgarner and Tim Lincecum, and helped the Giants sweep the Padres in a series of three games or more for the first time since Sept. 12-14, 2011.

Arizona 5 Colorado 4  The Rockies eight game winning streak came to an abrupt end when the Arizona Diamondbacks scored two runs in the ninth inning to beat the Rockies 5-4. Didi Gregorius hit his second major league home run and singled to start a two-run rally in the ninth inning that led Arizona

Philadelphia 7 St. Louis 3  the Philadelphia Phillies scored four runs in the eighth inning to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-3. Michael Young extended his hitting streak to 12 games with an infield single off reliever Mitchell BoggsDomonic Brown singled to put runners on the corners with one out. Ben Revere made it 4-3 on a go-ahead single up the middle.
