Cliff Lee Shuts Down Miami in 3-0 Victory

Philadelphia PhilliesPhiladelphia Phillies starter Cliff Lee pitched a complete-game shutout against the Miami Marlins on Wednesday, giving the Phillies a 3-0 victory and the control of the four-game series at Miami.

In nine scoreless innings, Lee surrendered just three hits (all singles) and struck out five batters along with three walks. Offensively, Lee would give himself some support by collecting two base hits.

The shutout is the twelfth of Lee’s career and his first since September 5, 2011. This was the third start in which Lee has held his opponents scoreless and the eighth in which he has surrendered less than three runs.

For a Phillies rotation that has been inconsistent this season, Lee has served as one of the few bright spots, anchoring the rotation with a 5-2 record and a solid 2.48 ERA, while posting an impressive 55/13 strikeout to walk ratio in 72.2 innings of work.

Phillies right fielder Delmon Young led the offensive charge, going 2-for-4 with a solo home run off of Marlins starter Kevin Slowey in the fourth-inning.

The Phillies have won their last two games and seven of their last ten, improving to 23-24 on the season.
