Clay Buchholz and Jon Lester have effectively anchored an inconsistent starting rotation in an overall strong season for the Boston Red Sox. On Wednesday night, Buchholz continued his stellar season with a strong start, helping the Red Sox in a 6-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox.
Buchholz worked seven strong innings, surrendering just one run on five hits, while striking out four batters and walking three. Although he needed 113 pitches to make it through the seventh inning, Buchholz was able to notch his ninth quality start in ten appearances this season. In those nine quality starts, Buchholz has given up two or less runs.
The Boston hurler improved to a perfect 7-0 record on the season and now boasts an AL-leading 1.73 ERA, along with a 73/27 strikeout to walk ratio in 72.2 innings of work.
While Buchholz provided solid pitching, the Boston offense provided six runs of support, four of such coming in the final two innings of the game. David Ortiz and Daniel Nava each drove in two runs.
With the Yankees’ loss to Baltimore on Wednesday, Boston was able to pull within half a game of the AL East division lead, improving to a 28-19 record on the season.
