The Detroit Tigers and the Texas Rangers have agreed to a deal that would send Prince Fielder to the Rangers for second baseman Ian Kinsler. Both players would have to pass physicals.
Since there is a significant amount of cash in the deal the Commissioner’s Office will have to approve the transaction. Kinsler is due $62 million over the next four years while Fielder is due $168 million over the next seven. The Rangers will get cash back in the deal.
Fielder, 29, has spent the past two seasons with the Tigers and hit .279 with 25 home runs and 106 RBI this past season. Fielder signed a nine-year deal, worth $214 million with the Tigers before the 2012 season.
Kinsler had spent his entire eight-year career with the Rangers. He hit .277 last season and hit 13 home runs and drove in 72 runs.
Trading Kinsler would open up second base for Jurickson Profar and give the Rangers a power hitting first baseman. The Tigers would likely move Miguel Cabrera across the diamond to first base and open a spot for prospect Nick Castellanos. Castellanos is a former infielder who made the move to the outfield
