Matt Moore turned in six solid innings, striking out eight and Ben Zobrist drove in three runs to lead the Tampa Bay Rays over the Cleveland Indians 4-0. Moore a notoriously slow starter in his professional career limited the Indians to just two hits, both by Michael Bourn. Jake McGee and Brandon Gomes each worked a perfect inning for the Rays. Joel Peralta finished the two-hitter with a 1-2-3 ninth.
Jose Lobaton and Sam Fuld had two hits each for Tampa Bay, and Yunel Escobar added an RBI on a fielder’s choice. Rays pitching retired the last 17 Indians batters in the game and ended with 11 strikeouts total.
Rays News and Notes – The Rays put RHP Jeff Niemann on the 15-day disabled list because of soreness in his pitching shoulder. Niemann, moved to the bullpen after competing with Roberto Hernandez for the final spot in the starting rotation this spring, had not appeared in a game this season. RHP Brandon Gomes was recalled from Triple-A Durham to fill the roster opening. Stephen Vogt Was traded to the Oakland A’s today for a player to be named later or cash. Vogt hit .272 with homers and 43 RBIs at Triple-A Durham last season.
