MLB suspended Carlos Quentin for eight games for his role in the bench clearing brawl with the Los Angeles Dodgers Thursday night that resulted in Dodgers right-hander Zack Greinke suffering a broken collarbone. Greinke will be sidelined for eight weeks and will not be suspended. Greinke is 1-0 with a 1.59 ERA in two starts this season. Los Angeles signed Greinke to a six-year contract worth $147 million this offseason.
Quentin appealed the suspension, which means that he could be potentially be active on Monday when the Padres begin a three-game series against the Dodgers in Los Angeles. Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw offered some words of wisdom to the Padres outfielder. “If he’s smart, he’ll take the suspension,” Kershaw said after Friday’s game vs. the D-backs. “Eight games is not nearly enough. For what he did, he should be OK with that.”
Suspended players often begin the appeal process only to withdraw the appeal later depending on what’s best for their individual teams and situations.
