Houston’s George Springer Proving He Has What it Takes

George Springer’s “Springer’s Dingers” is the hot new catch phrase in Major League Baseball to explain the towering homer runs Springer has been launching out of ball parks around the country.

The outfielder for the Astros, who helped the team earn a 12-2 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday collected four hits, scored four runs, smacked a pair of round trippers and knocked in 5 runs.

Following his most recent outburst on offense, Springer is now batting a lofty .307 with 27 homers and 60 RBIs and the season is just a few games more than half over.

He has posted 22 multi-hit games dating back to May 26 and is the first leadoff batter in baseball history to hit 27 homers prior to the All-Star break.

Teammate Jose Altuve was instrumental in Friday’s win with three hits. The second baseman for the Astros is now hitting .342 for the season and became the first Astros player in history to have four consecutive games with three hits.

Altuve might be baseball’s best hitter without the last name Trout, but rarely does he get mentioned due to his perceived lack of any power. If he maintains his current pace throughout the season, he could win the American League MVP.

The outburst by Houston came against Aaron Sanchez the ace for the Blue Jays. The right-hander, who is 25, was making his first start since the middle of May because of blister problems. Houston hit him hard with 8 runs, with 5 being earned in just 1 ½ inning. Sanchez issued four base on balls and two home runs in what Toronto called an uninspiring effort.

Houston is now 60-28 and narrowly holding onto baseball’s best record over the National League West Los Angeles Dodgers and their offense that is clicking on all cylinders why they had enjoyed much success of late.

Both of the home runs Springer hit on Friday were to the opposite field. The stacked batting order for Houston is able to smother any pitcher early one, which happened to Sanchez when Houston led by 8-0 after only two innings.

The dual identity Springer has of a high on base percentage and power from the leadoff spot allows him to at time take games over like on Friday, but he can also play setup for the team’s long list of sluggers who follow him in the order.
