CHICAGO – Brandon Morrow pitched a two-hit shutout and struck out 5 and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Chicago White Sox 4-0 . Morrow allowed A.J. Pierzynski just two singles on the night. José Bautista hit his 15th home run in the sixth inning and Radji Davis hit his fourth to give Morrow all the offense he would need. The powerful White Sox lineup has now lost two games in a row. The Blue Jays had 13 hits on the night.
BOSTON – Wei-Yin Chen scattered seven hits over seven innings and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Boston Red Sox 2-1 . Josh Beckett pitched well for the Red Sox allowing just two runs and five hits while striking out five in eight innings. He has now pitched at least seven innings in his last five starts. Closer Jim Johnson came on in the ninth for his 18th save. The Red Sox are now back to 500 at 28-28.
DETROIT – Michael Brantley hit a three-run homer and Johnny Damon added a two-run single as the Cleveland Indians outscored the Detroit Tigers 9-6. The Tigers fell 6 games under 500. Jeanmar Gomez allowed six earned runs in his five innings of work and still got the win. Chris Perez earned his 19th save of the season.
NEW YORK – Ivan Nova continued his mastery over the Tampa Bay Rays and the New York Yankees earned their second straight win over the Rays 4-1. Tampa Bay lost for the sixth time in eight games and dropped to third place after holding at least a share of the division lead since May 27. Alex Cobb pitched into the eighth inning for Tampa Bay and pitched well, giving up four runs and striking out four. However, the Rays can only manage four hits with two of those hits coming in the ninth-inning. Robinson Cano and Mark Teixeira each homered for the Yankees.
